So, Medschool?

Terinspirasi dari Emily
So you decide to be a medstudent? Well, maybe you're tired of hearing this, but i must say, the path you've chosen might be the roughest path you've (and will) ever walked on. At first you might be very glad and proud to be accepted in a medschool, for it is known to be very hard to get in. But later as you go, you will find medschool is way more "demanding" than you initially think. Altho you will also find medicine is art, beautiful yet dangerous art, if you dont step carefully :3

For years, medschools had been on the top popular college choices, when it comes to future financial security and so-called wide prospect to be helping others in need. Millions apply for medschool every year, but only few thousands are accepted. For those who have been successful in eliminating other millions bright candidates, i personally say congratulations! Welcome in the boundless jungle of Medicine world! ^^

Okay, so medicine. It is indeed amazing. In your junior years you will be amazed to know how perfect human body is built. So perfect that you will spend nights memorizing every natural creeks on humerus bone (yes, our simple upper arm bone). You will be like, "OMG that silly creek has a name!" But later you will realize that the silly creek is indeed important to be there (and named) so that nerves and blood vessels can pass through and muscle fibers can be inserted. Altho maybe you will forget the creek's name few days after anatomy exam *evilgrin*

You will also be amazed by how flawless human body works, how every enzymes are used efficiently, and how cells kill themselves so that they wont be burden for other younger cells. Oh yes, all the process must be deeply covered. You must learn all the structure (macroscopically and microscopically), the normal physiology, the biochemistry, and all possible errors that can happen in ALL systems in human body. And you have to finish and master all of these, in 3 years. So, be ready for 3 years of bloody struggle, literally. And another 2 years of much more exhausting days when you finally facing real patients, days and nights.

And not just the academic stuffs. You will be in same class with extraordinary people. Much much brighter and crazier than you imagine. You might be number one in senior high scool without putting much effort, but in medschool, believe me, you cant. All of people here are smart, and you will need more than intelligence if you want to outsmart them. But one thing you must know, it is not important for you to outsmart anyone. Important thing is you understand what you need to understand, so you wont harm your future patients O:)

two quotations i always remember, from my senior and my prof:
"Saya belajar bukan buat ujian, tapi buat pasien saya kelak"
"Jadi dokter diniatkan buat menolong orang, bukan buat cari uang. Kalo ikhlas, uang akan datang dengan sendirinya"

Stressful as it seems, being a medstudent is indeed an enjoyable experience. You will learn many precious things:

  • How to use your time efficiently. Time-management is very crucial for medstudents, and most of us earn this useful skill soon as we start medschool. We are trained to not waste even a sec, because a sec may determine the life and death of a person :O. I proudly say, medstudents are very efficient multitasker. Time is muscle!
  • How to treat people nicely. As a doctor, we are required to show our best smile and to look happy whenever facing patients, no matter how bad our mood might be.
  • How to dress properly. If you imagine entering college means no more uniform and you finally be able to express yourself in t-shirts and worn-out jeans, nah, you better take another college, not medschool. In medschool we are obliged to dress nicely in formal clothes. Say goodbye to jeans and t-shirts, fill you closet with more skirts, shirts, and nice blouses.
  • Sayonara to calculus! Sayonara to all those crazy physics formulas! And welcome to a way more confusing muscle nomenclatures, bacteria classifications, and twisting drug pharmacodynamic! Ha Ha Ha. :"D
  • How to self-diagnose. On the other hand, too much knowledge about health facts and disease sometimes makes us paranoid. I myself, after knowing that one yolk contains more cholesterol than maximum cholesterol load per day, dont dare to eat more than 2 eggs per week. .__.
  • How to be ikhlas. Ikhlas accepting the fact that you have your exam tomorrow but today you must follow up a patient. Ikhlas doing large pile of assignment (academic and non-academic) every week. Ikhlas having less holiday than any of your non-medstudent friends. Ikhlas watching your friend already having fun on 3-months holiday while you still struggling with respiratory module. Ikhlas having 3-4 exams every 6 weeks while your friend only 2 exams in one semester. Ikhlas having less sleep. Ikhlas.

wew, i end up curcol .__.
